When outside New Zealand, the majority of day-to-day insurance policies will not cover you. All sorts of things can go wrong, whether through illness, theft, or property damage. In order for you to travel with complete peace of mind, it is recommended that you take out some form of Travel Insurance.

Mike Henry Travel Insurance has been around since 1984 and is a specialist in the travel insurance in New Zealand. Mike Henry Travel Insurance is a business division of underwriter, IAG New Zealand Ltd, which is rated by Standard and Poors as Very Strong (AA-) financial strength as at 3 November 2008.

You should take out Mike Henry Travel Insurance as soon as you have booked your holiday, or at least as soon as you have paid for your tickets. Your policy includes the cancellation of travel benefit which you may require prior to travel. For example; if you or a close family member becomes ill and you are unable to travel, you are covered for travel and accommodation costs you had prepaid for your holiday and are unable to recover.

Answer:

Yes, most policies can be extended as long as it is done before the policy expires but within the limits of that particular policy.  For example: The Aussie Essentials Travel Insurance policy has a maximum duration of 21 days per trip which can not be extended. Most other direct policies can be extended via credit card by calling Mike Henry Travel Insurance, on 09 377 5958 or if outside New Zealand +64 9 377 5958, by contacting the Travel Agent who issued your Travel Insurance Policy or by contacting the emergency assistance number. Most policies cannot exceed a total of 12 months with extensions available to a maximum of 2 years.

Depending on which policy you have purchased the maximum period of cover under most Mike Henry Travel Insurance policies are 365 days. Extensions are available to a maximum of 2 years total insurance. For example the Aussie Essentials Travel Insurance policy which has a maximum duration of 21 days and covers travel to Australia only.

Answer:

A Pre-Existing Medical condition is a physical defect, medical condition or disease for which medical treatment or advice has been received during the six months prior to applying for Mike Henry travel insurance cover, or an ongoing medical condition or disability that exists when applying for Mike Henry travel insurance cover.

The requirement for a medical certificate will depend upon your destination, your age, the Mike Henry Travel Insurance policy you have chosen, and when you last received medication or medical advice for your condition.  There is no cover for Pre-Existing Medical conditions under our Travel Easy Travel Insurance and Aussie Essentials Travel Insurance policies.

ADVENTURE SPORTS: Will I be covered if I want to go white water rafting or scuba diving?

Answer:

On most of our policies various sports and activities are covered automatically, depending on which policy you have chosen, although we do not automatically cover mountaineering or rock climbing using support ropes, scuba diving below 30 meters, white water rafting on a river graded higher than grade 4, racing (except on foot) or any professional sporting activity. We do not cover sporting equipment or watercraft of any type whilst in use.

MOTOR BIKES: I am planning to hire a motorbike. Will I be covered while I'm riding it and will I be covered if I injure someone else or their property?

Answer:

Terms and conditions apply whilst riding any motorbike with a rating higher than 200cc. Please contact Mike Henry Travel Insurance for these terms. If you injure someone else or damage their property whilst riding, no cover is available under Mike Henry Travel Insurance policies. Please ensure that your Vehicle Rental agreement covers you for this circumstance.  Travel Easy Travel Insurance does not offer cover for motorcycling if the driver does not hold a current New Zealand motorcycle licence (whether or not a licence is required in the country in which the motorcycle is ridden).

Answer:

Some Mike Henry Travel Insurance policies cover claims resulting from work-related activities, provided you are unable to claim from an alternative source. Manual work is excluded, unless you contact Mike Henry Travel Insurance to arrange cover as additional terms and conditions may apply. Personal Liability cover is excluded whilst working. In all cases if you are working then you will need to contact Mike Henry Travel Insurance for a Business Travel Insurance policy to cover tools of trade.

LUGGAGE: We will be hiring a car, if we leave our luggage in the car will it be covered?

Answer:

There is no cover is available for luggage left unattended in a public place in all Mike Henry Travel Insurance policies. This includes places like the beach, hotel foyers or in a motor vehicle overnight (between the hours of 10pm and 6am local time). Photographic equipment, mobile telephones, computers and jewellery must be stored in the boot whilst the vehicle is unattended during the day.

You will need to report the loss to the carrier and get from them a written report, usually in the form of a Baggage Irregularity Report (BIR). Initially you will need to claim through the airline, with any shortfall being covered up to the mislaid luggage limit of your Mike Henry Travel Insurance Policy. You will also need to provide proof of ownership of the items lost.

Yes. For the Travel Easy Travel Insurance product you must be a New Zealand resident however Mike Henry Travel Insurance can offer insurance to Non New Zealanders. Contact Mike Henry Travel Insurance for terms and conditions.

Mike Henry Travel Insurance services can provide a policy to suit your individual travel requirements.  We have policies specifically designed for Business or Leisure travellers. Working holidays and working trips are excluded for cover under the Travel Easy Travel Insurance policy.

Travel Easy Travel Insurance single item limit is $1,500 and does not offer provision for increase of this amount as there is no cover for any single items above this value. Under our Leisure Travel Insurance policy any item or set of items is automatically covered to $1,500.  Video cameras and cameras are covered up to $2,500. The Business Travel Insurance policy offers automatic cover for business items and trade samples to $5000. This cover can be increased by contacting Mike Henry Travel Insurance for approval – a surcharge and additional terms and conditions will apply.

EXCESS: When will my excess apply?

Your excess will apply whenever you claim. This will be deducted from each loss which occurs as a separate event. For example, while on holiday you fall and require hospitalisation and in falling, you also break your camera. Both of these claims relate to the same event (the fall) you are required to pay only one excess.

Rental Vehicle Excess: Please check your policy purchased as there is a standard excess on that policies that provide cover for Rental Vehicle. That standard excess for these types of claims is $300, so what that means is that you are responsible for the first $300 of every Rental Vehicle claim.
